G.I. Combat #139

G.I. Combat #139 (On Sale: October 9, 1969) has a Haunted Tank cover by Joe Kubert. This one is a standard "we think we are safe but we are not" cover and Kubert could churn these out, seemingly forever.

The Haunted Tank stars in "Corner of Hell," called "Corner of Hades" on the cover, by Robert Kanigher and Russ Heath. The Haunted Tank is night-dropped into narrow Zahilla Pass in a effort to ward off an enemy attack on the stronghold of Prince Akmed, but due to an attack from a night fighter plane, their chute is damaged and they end up short of the pass. They arrive in time to see a funeral pyre being lit for a dead Prince Akmed and a living Princess Azeela and step in to put a stop to it and save the Princess. The Mufti declares the team "infidels" for contaminating their Islamic holy place.

He goes on in an attempt to turn his tribe against the Americans, saying that since he saved the Princess's life, he must marry her. Surprisingly, Jeb agrees and they are married. They spend a wonderful honeymoon in a tent and then in the morning Jeb leaves the camp with the Princess, heading off for the Zahilla Pass.

There they get into a hairy fight with a number of Nazi tanks. Through it all the Princess is by Jeb's side. However, they are hopelessly outnumbered and know it is just a matter of time before the Nazis push through. Suddenly, the tribesmen come to the rescue, saying they are against the Nazis and for the Princess. They quickly turn the tide in Jeb's favor, when the mufti arrives kill Jeb. The princess jumps in the way, protecting her husband and a Nazi shell takes out the mufti. In the end, Jeb hands his wife's lifeless body over to her tribe. This story was reprinted in Showcase Presents: Haunted Tank Vol. 2 TPB.

The back-up story is "A Man... a Chain... a Rock" by Bob Haney and Fred Ray.

Edited by Joe Kubert.
